My Project Topic

I am really interested in doing my final project about the deities in Daoism. I think Daoism is a really interesting religion because it doesn’t worship gods in the same way that other religions do. Daoist deities are lesser known among most people, and I would like to do research on who the deities are and what kind of powers they hold and why. I want to know if there are any special rituals or worship practices that go with them.

The journey of Mulian really made me start thinking about the importance of Chinese myth. I know that Mulian is a Buddhist story and not a Daoist story. I am particularly interested in Daoism because it originated in China, unlike Buddhism. I want to know what relationship the important Daoist figures have to the ancient Chinese burial practices and the five phases and the yin yang. It is important to understand Daoism because it wasn’t there at the beginning and it isn’t widely practiced now, but it has made a major influence on Chinese culture.

The reading we did about oracle bones and I want to know if the rankings of the spirits translate to the Daoist Deities. What are the differences, if any, between major and minor deities. I want to know exactly how much control deities have over the lives of people.

Survivor: Ancient China

When traveling back in time to an ancient civilization, there are several things one must keep in mind. This is a guide that will keep you safe when going back to ancient China. While you must obviously avoid causing a time paradox that would tear the fabric of our very universe, you must also keep cultural practices in mind.

  1. The five phases. The five phases: fire, metal, wood, earth, and water keep the balance of the universe. You must be very careful to live within the balance of the five phases. If any of the phases are thrown off, it can cause bad luck or a number of other disasters.
  2. Yin and Yang. In Ancient China, two forces control the universe. Yin and Yang are two equal, but opposite forces that keep the universe in balance. Before traveling back to China, you must learn about these forces in order to keep your yin and your yang balanced.
  3. Ancestors. Ancient China holds their ancestors in high esteem and it is important to learn how to respect the dead. When you go back to Ancient China, learn to respect the dead. Give them the sacrifices they request, or complete the tasks the dead need completed.

If you keep these things in mind, you will be able to survive your time travel journey to Ancient China.
